STOUGHTON, Wis. - One death and many other first responders critically injured resulting from an explosion that caused a massive fire in southern Wisconsin on Thursday night.
The three-alarm fire took more than four hours to contain while police, fire, and EMS crews from all surrounding areas came to provide aid. The Dane County police department is currently working to notify victims' families.
More than 800 customers are lacking natural gas in Stoughton according to Wisconsin’s energy provider, Collaborative Energy Solutions. It is unknown when natural gas will be restored, but search and rescue operations are ongoing at the site.
There are many community members spreading appreciation for local first responders on social media. Stoughton Mayor Eliot Thomsen posted on Facebook his encouragement: “...I do know that the bravery of the first responders helped prevent this catastrophe from being much worse. I want to extend thanks to the police officers and EMS crews from Stoughton, as well as Madison, Cottage Grove, Monona, Fitchburg and McFarland who came to help.”
A local restaurant, the Stoughton Diner also tweeted their support: “We are closed tonight due to the fire downtown. Our staff and customers got out safely. Our thoughts and prayers are with the first responders on the site. #Stoughton.”
A one-mile evacuation remains around the site and more than 100 people have been evacuated. There is an emergency shelter available at the Stoughton high school gym for anyone evacuated. Additionally, the YMCA of Stoughton is offering free showers to those who cannot be in their home, according to Dane County Sheriff Alice Tompkins.
